2024 Golden Apple Award Winners Announced

The annual Golden Apple Awards recognize outstanding service, teaching and mentoring by Drexel University College of Medicine faculty and professional staff. The honorees are nominated by each class of medical students who vote to determine the award winners. Read more.

“Birthing-Friendly” Hospital Designations

The Biden administration recently launched its new “Birthing-Friendly” hospital designation to recognize high-quality maternity care. Many of the hospitals recognized are affiliated with the College of Medicine as clinical education sites. The new designation aims to improve outcomes, as 80 percent of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, with concerning disparities among racial and ethnic minority groups. We congratulate Cape Fear, Kaiser, UPMC, Tower Health-Reading Hospital, Well Span – York, Bayhealth Med Center, Holy Redeemer and Virtua (Mt. Holly) for their excellence. (November 2023)

Mark Woodland Named Associate Dean, Advocacy and Policy

Mark B. Woodland, MS, MD, clinical professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, has been appointed to a new role as associate dean, advocacy and policy effective September 1, 2023. Dr. Woodland has been a faculty member at the College of Medicine for nearly three decades, having served as OB-GYN residency program director and vice dean for graduate medical education as well as faculty for professionalism and bioethics courses. R03 Grant

Karen Berkowitz, MD, associate professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Obstetrics & Gynecology, received an R03 grant ($100,000 direct costs) from NIH for her project “Generation and Characterization of a Novel Mouse Line to Elucidate CHTF18 Function in Male and Female Meiosis.” The grant period is 2022-2024.

Reading Hospital/Tower Health News and Announcements

Congratulations to Holly Metzgar, MD, MS, for their appointment to associate program director of the Reading Hospital/Tower Health ob/gyn residency program.

Congratulations to Mark B. Woodland, MD, MS, for his election to the board of directors of the Federation of State Medical Boards for a two year term.

Mark B. Woodland, MD, MS was the 3rd Sterling Memorial Lecture Keynote Speaker for the Council on Resident Education in OBGYN (CREOG). He presented, “Career Perspectives: Leadership & Mentorship Leading to Resilience in the Clinical Learning Environment,” an overview of his 35 years with CREOG and his role as immediate past chair of CREOG.
